I’ve been waking up at 2 am a lot this past week. What’s on my mind? Thanks for asking; let me tell you! Tariffs, forest fires, aging presidents, lack of Canadian leadership, polarizing media, the spread of misinformation, AI, and the future…I’ll stop there. How are you sleeping?

We can all agree that we live in a world of constant change; uncertainty is the new normal. So what is the best way to navigate it? Well, it isn’t about predicting the future. It’s about remembering history, building resilience, and positioning your organization as purposefully as you can.

Here are a few key considerations for your business and leadership as we enter into 2025:

For Business:

  • Financial Fortitude: Know your numbers, set your budget, and schedule your reviews as part of your strategic rhythm. Where do you need to cut back? Where do you need to double down? Is there a way to diversify and innovate using technology or AI?
  • Agility and Adaptability: What does this mean and what does it look like in your business? Define it. Empower employees to make decisions and be critical thinkers, while also embracing flexible processes.
  • Customer Focus: Understanding your customers’ evolving needs and preferences is crucial. Stay close to your customer base through feedback mechanisms, market research, and social listening. By anticipating their changing demands, you can maintain loyalty and identify new areas for growth.
  • Scenario Planning: Instead of trying to predict the future, develop multiple scenarios based on different potential outcomes. This could be a great exercise for the looming tariff threat. Consider best-case, worst-case, and most likely scenarios to cover a wider spectrum of potential futures.

For Leadership:

  • Clear and Consistent Communication: Transparent communication is essential. What do you need to communicate, and how will you communicate it? What key themes, and core messages need to be communicated to support your strategy? Announce it. Say it again. Say it again. Keep your team informed through various channels: town halls, fireside chats, online news boards, what else? Remember open dialogue fosters trust and reduces anxiety-and best case, your employees might have some recommendations for your challenges!
  • Empathy and Support: Uncertainty can be stressful for employees. When we don’t address the feelings of employees they get in the way and disrupt productivity. Foster a culture of open communication, acknowledge concerns, and offer resources to help employees cope with change. As Brene Brown says “soft front, strong back.”
  • Focus on Long-Term Vision: Maintain a focus on the long-term vision. Communicate the organization’s overall goals and how the current challenges fit into the bigger picture. Ensure your employees have their own performance plans that support this vision and are clear on the responsibility they bear to achieving this vision.

Through the dark there is light:

Where’s the opportunity for your business? By focusing on financial stability, adaptability, customer focus, and strong leadership, businesses can not only survive but thrive in the face of uncertainty. Embrace change, be proactive, and see these times not as obstacles, but as growing pains to something exciting and new.
